6th Green Corps

< My Story by Eun-byul Cho >

Have you ever suffered from the yellow sand? Or have you ever imagined how painful it might be? During a month around April 2006, I suffered from a severe sore throat. The reason was that the yellow sand from China was recorded its worst that year. I couldn?t see buildings merely 10meters away and always had to wear a mask outside. However that could not shield me from an endless, hacking cough.

That year, I taught as an English tutor, and I had to teach many classes everyday. However, I couldn't speak out to my students due to my sore throat. When I had a similar symptom before, I would easily expect to get better by drinking some herb tea or take some herb-based medicine. Not this time. I went to the hospital, took a shot and some medicine. However, it would not work at all. Worse, if I wanted to drive my car, I had to wash my car first because it was always coated with yellow dust.

After I went through such pain, I realized the severity of the situation and decided I should make an effort to protect the environment. That's why I became a member of Future Forest. Future Forest is an organization that annually goes to Kubuqi desert, Inner Mongolia to plant trees and combat one of the fastest desertification in the world. Of course, this also helps to reduce the yellow sand phenomenon.

I'm proud to be a member of the Future Forest. I can't forget the moment when I scooped the sand to plant the trees. When I told my friends that I had gone to the desert to plant trees, they wondered if trees could survive at all. However, it is reported that 80% of trees which we planted to be thriving. I also believe our efforts can build the Great Green Wall-28km tree barrier stretching north and south in the Kubuqi desert.

No matter who or where you are, if you are concerned and willing to take action about the abnormal weather phenomena, this could be the right time for you to make the tiniest effort to preserve environment.
